Pomona, N.Y. --
Michael Stack hit his first career grand slam to tie the game in the middle innings, but the Adelphi University baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans in non-conference play on Monday afternoon.
Andrew Sesto was undone by the long ball in his first start of the year, as he surrendered three home runs in the third that put Adelphi (19-15) behind, 4-0. Nonetheless, one swing off Stack's bat in the top of the fourth tied the game, after
Brandon Morse and
Tyler Warshefskie singled and
Eric Hassell walked to load the bases. The senior shortstop recorded just his third career home run, and tallied his first extra base hit this season since the season opener against the Spartans on Feb. 28.
However, Saint Thomas Aquinas (22-12) responded with a run in the fifth and sixth on a pair of sacrifice flies against
Kieran McLaughlin and
Michael Demarest, as both runs were unearned due to an error and a balk from the Adelphi side. Four of the top five hitters in the Spartans' order recorded two hits on the day, as right fielder Giovanni Dingcong recorded his second home run in as many weeks against Sesto.Â
In four of the last five innings, the Panthers put at least one runner on, but were unable to push any more runs across the board en route to dropping the rubber game between the two teams this season.
The Panthers are back in Northeast-10 Conference action tomorrow, April 18, with a 3:30 pm single game against the Pace University Setters.
