Garden City, N.Y. - The top-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse program, despite being held to their lowest amount of goals this season, took a 7-3 decision from no. 6 LIU Post in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Jacqueline Jahelka and
Kole Pollock each contributed two goals en route to the top-10 defeat of the Pioneers (9-2), as three different teammates accounted for solo goals.
Alison Johnson, who had one goal, led the team with four points, adding three helpers along the way. On the defensive end, the Panthers (12-0) totaled 13 caused turnovers to the visitors seven and were nearly perfect in clear attempts (19-20).
Adelphi trailed for much of the first half of action after LIU Post got on the board at 23:57. Four shots and almost ten minutes later the hosts evened the score at 1-1 with
Kate Beier's 26th of the season. Beier continued to press on offense, but missed back-to-back shots wide, however Pollock and
Chelsea Abreu connected to take the teams' first lead of the contest. The Brown and Gold added one more before the opening half expired, this time as Jahelka and Johnson teamed up to lead by two at halftime. Although the Pioneers scored first, the host defense caused three turnovers after the 15-minute mark to keep them at bay.
Once again the Green and Gold opened the scoring, as Alexis Newman got past
Hailey Peterson within the first two minutes of the second frame. The Panthers never let the score become even for the remainder of the contest, as they added a fourth and fifth tally. With a three-goal lead the teams both spent the next 12 minutes heading up and down Motamed Field, each getting shots off that either missed the mark or were saved and then playing defense.
With a Peterson save at 8:43, she flipped the ball to
Michele Scannell who marched down the field and netted her first of the game without any interference. Johnson and Jahelka switched roles for the final goal from the Adelphi side to seal the deal and pick up their twelfth straight win. LIU Post snuck in one more goal with five to play, however it was too late as they were plagued with late turnovers, limiting their opportunities.
The Adelphi women's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 when they head north for another IWLCA top-10 battle, this time at Le Moyne College. This week the Dolphins (9-0 NE10) were ranked third in the national poll, behind top-ranked Adelphi and No. 2 Lindenwood. Both teams, undefeated in conference action will meet up Tuesday, with the victor atop the conference standings as the two remain as the last undefeated teams.
