Softball Sweeps Saint Rose to Close Out Weekend Set

Albany, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team closed out its four-game weekend road series with back-to-back Northeast-10 Conference victories against the College of Saint Rose Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (27-12-1, 17-5 NE10) swept the Golden Knights (8-16, 6-4) with a 10-4 win in the first, and then taking the 8-0 nightcap.

In the opener, Adelphi put up a four-spot in the first inning, while adding another tally in the second on a sacrifice fly by Brenna Martini. With combined efforts by Martini, Stephanie Staiano and Nicole Camera, the Panthers benefited as the trio drove in six runs for the game one win. In game two, Adelphi managed to score eight runs, which was more than enough offense as Jessica Vadala and Camera allowed just one hit in the circle.

Game 1
Martini, Camera and Christina Rizzi were responsible for three of Adelphi's four runs in the first, with a sacrifice fly, double and single respectively as a Golden Knight error led to the fourth and a 4-0 lead before the home team even came to bat. Martini also brought in the Panthers' fifth run in the second inning with another sac fly, allowing Danielle Cutuli to score after she hit a double earlier on in the inning.

Facing a 5-0 deficit, the Golden Knights took advantage of two Panther errors, three walks and a hit batter by both Kristin Fealy and Vadala to score four and make it a one-run game, 5-4.

Nonetheless, the Panthers came back full force in the fifth, pulling in four runs after back-to back walks and a single by Megan Lewis to start off the inning. Staiano drove in two with a single, before a passed ball and an error in the outfield accounted for Adelphi's other two runs. The final run came as Adelphi opened the top of the sixth with a bunt single by Nicoletta Cuccio, who stole second and later came home a Camera single to add the 10th run of the game.

Though they had at least one base-runner in every inning but the seventh, the Golden Knights never got an opportunity to close the gap against Vadala on the mound, as the Brown and Gold took the game one win.

Game 2
A Krista King single kicked off the first inning, and a Martini double led to two RBIs after Cuccio was hit by a pitch. Adelphi's second first inning of the afternoon also resulted in a four-spot, as Rizzi singled to drive in two for the 4-0 lead. Adding to the early lead, the second inning consisted of a Martini double, which brought home Kailah Konkel and King, upping the score 6-0. After another run crossed for Adelphi in the third, the scoring stopped at the top of the fourth as a Lewis fly to center field led to the final RBI of the game, scoring Camera who previously singled and stole second.

A single for Erin Maloney to lead off the third was the lone hit allowed by Adelphi pitching in game two, as Vadala went the first four and Camera finished with a flourish for the sweep. Vadala improves her record on the season to 10-2 after earning both wins in a double-header for the second time this season.

The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, April 19, when they travel to Pace University for an NE10 doubleheader beginning at 3 pm.
