Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Purdie Jr. Scores OT Goal to Lift Adelphi Over Bentley, 13-12

Waltham, Mass. - Gordon Purdie, Jr. netted his second overtime goal this season on Saturday to help Adelphi men's lacrosse defeat Bentley University, 13-12 in Northeast 10 Conference action.

Leading the offense during regulation was Ian Kirby, who accounted for four goals and one helper to finish with a team-high five points. Purdie Jr., Shane deBoer and Chris Racalbuto all chipped in two goals each with deBoer adding two assists for four points on the afternoon. Mark Andrejack, despite posting a 12-29 afternoon in the faceoff x scooped five ground balls and also caused one turnover. Bentley's Sam Hurley registered the only hat trick for the hosts.

Kirby netted the visitors first goal of the afternoon, less than two minutes into the first frame, when John Arcidiacono flipped him a pass which he fired home. Not much later however the home team responded with a goal that remained in place over the following six minutes. Adelphi ripped off three unanswered goals to take the lead which the Falcons later cut into, but a last second sneak in from Kirby kept the cushion at three.

The Brown and Gold netted four goals in the second quarter, holding the hosts to two to extend their lead to five at the half. After a quarter opening goal from Bentley, Gerard Cunningham connected with Chris Lopez which sparked the scoring for the Panthers. Coming out of the locker room, the Falcons scored three of the five goals over the first ten minutes of the third quarter. Brendan McDougal, who finished with 12 saves and the win, gave up five goals in the third alone as his counterparts only managed two goals on offense.

Adelphi maintained the lead heading into the final frame, but the home team netted two goals early to knot the game at 11-11. The Panthers took seven shots after the game turned into a stalemate, but it only took Matt Sanford one try to give Bentley the lead with almost five minutes left in the game. Back- to-back timeouts called by Head Coach Gordon Purdie settled his team, allowing deBoer to fire a shot by Robert Hamerman (11 saves) and even the score once again. Kirby got a shot on goal at the final second but it was again picked up by the Bentley netminder to force an overtime period.

Winning the opening faceoff and then calling a timeout, Adelphi drew up a plan for what was potentially their only opportunity at winning the game. DeBoer found Purdie Jr. up-high who buried his shot at the 2:35 mark to earn the Panthers a bounce-back victory from their Tuesday loss against Pace University.

The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, April 18 when they travel north to the College of Saint Rose for a rescheduled NE10 contest against the Golden Knights. Opening face off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
