Softball Snags Game One Pitchers' Duel, Erupts in Game Two for Sweep of Molloy

Rockville Centre, N.Y.  - Aggressive base running and hot bats helped the Adelphi University softball team take two at Molloy College in non-conference action Thursday afternoon. The Panthers narrowly took a nine-inning 1-0 win in the opener and captured a 10-2 nightcap victory, bouncing back from a two-game sweep on Wednesday.

Only three players registered hits in the first game, but the offense combined in game two for a season-high 16 hits. Nicole Camera and Krista King both went 3-for-5 at the dish, as Brenna Martini, Lauren Sandelier and Steph Staiano all registered two hits apiece in the second game.

Game One
Lindsay Mapes went the distance in game one, throwing through extra innings for the second time this season to improve to 8-4. The senior hurler scattered nine hits and struck out six, as the defense behind her held the Lions (11-9) scoreless despite getting runners on in six of nine innings.

The contest played out as a pitchers' duel, with neither team getting a runner in scoring position until the bottom of the third. Molloy threatened with bases loaded but Mapes capped the inning with a K to work out of the jam. Adelphi (14-10-1) stranded runners in the fourth, sixth and seventh but were unable to produce any runs, with the hosts getting last licks through regulation. Kaitlyn Snyder (3-4) doubled in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to reach home as the game continued into extra innings.

Martini drew a walk with one out in the top of the ninth and advanced to third as Camera doubled down the right field line in the next at-bat. With two outs and Staiano at the plate, Martini scrambled home on a pass ball off the glove of Alexandra Russo, sliding under the tag of Chelsea Hawks. The Panthers held on in the bottom half of the inning despite three consecutive singles from the home team. Staiano connected with Nicoletta Cuccio to stop the Lions from scoring, en route to the game one win.

Game Two
The Panthers, who suffered from quiet bats in the opener used 16 hits and strong performances in the circle en route to the game two 10-2 win. Kristin Fealy gave up three hits in five scoreless innings and struck out four to improve to 3-5 this season, with Jessica Vadala coming in relief for two innings of work.

Adelphi took the first two innings to find their way against Molloy starter Jenna Turato, but erupted in the third to quickly take a 4-0 lead. Cuccio, Martini and Camera loaded the bases for Sandelier who saw three pitches and on the third sent everyone back into the dugout with her first career grand slam. The home team was retired in order in the bottom half of the inning, making way for the visitor offense to get back to work.

It wasn't until the fifth that the Brown and Gold struck again, this time adding two runs on three hits. Emily Turney and Kailah Konkel registered back-to-back doubles, with King collecting an RBI single before the inning expired. The home team was unable to hold back the visitors as they put up three more runs in the sixth courtesy of four hits and one error in the field.

Molloy put up their only runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth after a pitching change for Adelphi. An untimely error plated both base runners, who reached on consecutive singles. Martini capped the scoring with one more home run, bringing her career total to 33, and closing out the 10-2 victory.

Adelphi softball returns to action on Saturday, April 1 when they host Le Moyne College in doubleheader Northeast 10 Conference action. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. on Janet L. Ficke Field.
