Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University softball program shut out Franklin Pierce in a Northeast-10 doubleheader matchup on Saturday at Janet L. Ficke Field, 13-3 and 8-0, as junior
Brenna Martini made program history in the process.
Martini earned the title of all-time leader in career home runs with a three-run shot in the opener, breaking Jessica Vogt's ('09) mark of 31. At the bottom of the third, Martini racked in three RBIs after of her 32nd career homer to advance the Panther lead en route to the 10-run win, while Megan Lewis combined with Nicoletta Cuccio and Kailah Konkel for six hits and five RBIs in game two.
Game 1
For the Panthers (12-8-1, 5-1 NE10), Lindsay Mapes pitched five innings while surrendering five hits, three runs while striking out nine batters in Adelphi's 13-3 run-ruled game one win.
Trailing 2-0, Adelphi made a dent at the bottom of the third as they tallied three runs all on RBI singles by Stephanie Staiano, Fallon McCarthy and Krista King to move ahead 3-2. After a brief tie from the Ravens, the Panthers added seven runs in the bottom of the third off the strength of a two-run triple off the bat of Danielle Cutuli and Martini's history-making homer to take control of game one. A pair of sacrifice flies for Krista King and Nicole Camera sandwiched a bases-loaded walk to Martini in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Game 2
A Lewis single down the field left line earned her first RBI of the day to put Adelphi on the board and start a five-run second inning. The pot continued to stir when Staiano followed with a double, adding to the score, before Konkel, King and Cuccio all contributed to plate a combined three runs to close out the bottom of the frame.
Lewis and Konkel combined to drive in another pair in the third, as the junior's double scored
Lauren Sandelier, before the freshman drove her in to make it 7-0. Martini's sacrifice fly in the fourth capped the Adelphi scoring, as
Kristin Fealy got the win after pitching all five innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.
The team will return to action on the road, Tuesday, March 28 as they take on the University of New Haven in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
