Softball Walks Off Against #21 SNHU Twice, 1-0 and 4-3

Garden City, N.Y. -- On a dramatic day on Janet L. Ficke Field, the Adelphi University softball team walked off in a pair of victories against NFCA Top 25 and Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire on Saturday, 1-0 and 4-3.

Krista King earned game one for Adelphi (10-8-1, 3-1 NE10) with a sacrifice fly out to left field advancing Stephanie Staiano to home plate for the game-winning RBI, while Nicole Camera marked her second in the park home run of the week to send game two to extra innings, before Staiano played hero in the nightcap by driving in Christina Rizzi in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Game 1
Lindsay Mapes faced her second pitching duel on Ficke mound in three days as Southern New Hampshire (11-7, 0-2 NE10) starter Maddy Barone matched Mapes in scoreless innings across the board. After a quiet six innings, a Jessica Torsiello double to center field began the seventh for the Penmen -- however, it wasn't enough to push a run across home plate.

The only run in the game came to the final moments in the bottom of the seventh inning as Staiano doubled down the left field line to begin, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a fly ball to left field by King was caught, Staiano raced home for the 1-0 Panther win.

Mapes received the victory as she recorded four strikeouts in the game while allowing just two hits to improve her personal record to 6-3.

Game 2
A walk by Megan Lewis followed by a Fallon McCarthy single to third base led to King's second RBI of the day, as she singled to right center, plating Lewis home for a 1-0 Adelphi lead in the second.

Southern New Hampshire responded with two runs at the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead, as they took advantage of three hits and two walks against Kristin Fealy after two were out. Later, in the top of the fourth, the Penmen left Adelphi behind two runs, as they added their third tally of the game on a Panther fielding error after two walks and another single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Adelphi answered as Danielle Cutuli singled through the right side to score Emily Turney, who had stroked a triple earlier in the inning to close the gap to 3-2. After Jessica Vadala threw a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, the Panther rally continued with two outs, as Camera smacked her in-the-park home run to right field to tie the score 3-3.

A steady final three innings went by with zeros across the line before Adelphi's winning moment, but Vadala faced her biggest challenge in the top of the eighth. Two walks and a fielder's choice loaded the bases, before Vadala induced a double play off the bat of Erin Morrissey and got Devan Rabidou to line out to end the threat.

To win the game in the 10th, Staiano singled through the right side to advanced Rizzi, who had singled with two outs, to take the 4-3 game two victory.

The team will to return to action on Sunday, March 26 as they take on Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 doubleheader scheduled for noon at Janet L. Ficke Field.
