Baseball Splits with Saint Anselm to Open NE10 Play, Honors All-Americans in Ceremony

Garden City, N.Y. -- A brilliant effort by TJ Santiago helped the Adelphi University baseball team earn a split with Saint Anselm College in its Northeast-10 Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.

Santiago was lights out for Adelphi in game on, throwing a complete game shutout, surrendering just five hits and striking out a season-high 11 in an 8-0 Adelphi win, before the Hawks hit back for an 8-2 win in game two. Between games, the program unveiled its new center field banner, honoring the 17 All-Americans in team history.

Game 1
The Panthers got Santiago a run in the second and a run in the third on sacrifice flies by Lawrence Cicileo and Steven Withers, which proved to be all the offense the senior needed in the game. Adelphi broke things open in the fourth, plating four runs on two hits, a walk, a hit batter and two Hawks' miscues, as Eric Hassell led off with a walk and Robert Vani doubled to set the table.

After setting down the first nine, Santiago allowed his first hit of the game in the fourth before retiring the side, but allowed just one Hawk in scoring position in nine innings. That came in the fifth, as he surrendered two singles, but got a strikeout to end the threat with two down. Adelphi added two in the seventh as well, on an RBI double for Brandon Morse and another sac fly for Cicileo.

Returning for the ninth at an even 100 pitches, Santiago retired the first two before allowing a base hit, but recorded a fielder's choice to second to end the game.

Game 2
The Hawks touched up Matthew O'Connor early and scored four runs on four hits, a walk and three wild pitches in the inning. The senior settled from there, throwing up zeroes in the third, fourth and fifth, and Adelphi got one back in the third, as Hassell's two-out double scored Tyler Becker, who walked earlier in the frame to make it 4-1.

Three singles plated a run for the Hawks in the sixth and after an intentional walk, O'Connor yielded to Michael Demarest, who allowed two inherited runners to score to make it 7-1 while getting out of the inning. Adelphi only managed to plate one run for the duration, but the Panthers had opportunities slip by for a rally, as they stranded a total of seven runners on base in the sixth, seventh and ninth -- including two bases-loaded opportunities.

The Hawks' final run of the game came against Michael Ceparano in the ninth, as the senior gave way to Keiran McLaughlin, who recorded his second scoreless appearance of the season.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, March 26 when they continue NE10 play with a 12 pm double-header against Saint Michael's.
