Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University baseball team pounded out 21 runs on 23 hits en route to sweeping a Northeast-10 Conference double header from visiting Saint Michael's College on Sunday afternoon, 12-5 and 9-2.
Eric Hassell had himself a five RBI afternoon on a 4-7 day at the plate, while scoring three runs. Also producing for the Panthers (13-7, 3-1 NE10) was
Brandon Morse, as the sophomore drove in four across the day while
Steven Withers and
Robert Vani each scored four runs at the top of the lineup.
Kory Cassara went 3-5 at the plate in game one, driving in a run while scoring two, while
Brett Malm went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in game one as well.
Game 1
After falling behind 2-0, a four-run third inning put Adelphi on top for good in the 12-5 game one win. Withers walked to lead off and
Michael Cattani was hit by a pitch to set the table for consecutive RBI singles by Hassell and Vani to tie the game 2-2. A pair of RBI groundouts by Morse and Malm doubled the Adelphi lead, but the visitors quickly got one back in the third against
Ed Baram. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position,
Chris Lemorocco put out the fire, getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the frame and keep Adelphi ahead.
Adelphi put runs up in each of the next five innings to secure the win, highlighted by a three-run sixth on four hits which saw Hassell and Morse record RBIs.
David Butler performed well in relief for the Brown and Gold over the remainder of the contest, as he threw four innings in relief, allowing four hits, one run and striking out six, while
Tom Ambrosino capped off the win with a perfect ninth.
Game 2
The Purple Knights (0-4, 0-4 NE10) took a 2-1 lead after the second in game two, but another four-run inning gave Adelphi the lead in the bottom of the frame. Two bases-loaded walks to Withers and Cattani put Adelphi back in front, before Vani stroked a sac fly and Cattani stayed in a rundown long enough to get Withers across for a 5-2 lead.
A run in the fourth and sixth was sandwiched between two in the fifth to close out the game for Adelphi, as Hassell tallied two RBIs in that time and Morse added another.
Steven Kuhn earned his first win of the season behind 4.1 effective innings, as he settled down after allowing two runs in the second.
Michael Tarpey cleaned up with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while
Andrew Sesto came out strong in the seventh, striking out the side on just 12 pitches to end the game.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, hosting the University of Bridgeport in a single, non-conference game at 3:30 pm.
