Baseball Captures 6-2 Victory in Non-Conference Battle at Molloy

Uniondale, N.Y. - Behind the combined 6-for-7 performance at the plate from Robert Vani and Kory Cassara, the Adelphi University baseball program picked up a 6-2 victory over the Lions of Molloy College at Mitchell Field on Thursday.

Vani was perfect at the dish, going 4-4 with one run scored, one RBI and two doubles as teammate Cassara went 2-3 with three RBI and one home run. Danny Taggart got the start in the non-conference tilt, going 5.1 innings in which he only let up two runs and struck out four. He was relieved by Daniel Lotito and then Michael Tarpey, the latter earning his second win of the season. Tarpey shut down the Lion (3-13) offense, facing eight batters and catching three backward Ks.

Adelphi (10-6) took the lead after two scoreless innings passed, chalking up two in the top of the third. Cassara led the inning off with a triple, just to be driven in on a Zack Levinson double down the left field line. The Panthers added another when a fielder's choice allowed Michael Cattani to reach safely, plating Levinson. The home team evened the score in the bottom half of the inning as they used three singles and one miscue in the field to push across two runs.

Both teams appeared to be in a deadlock over the next three innings, unable to string together any hits to produce a run. After a leadoff single and stolen base for Brandon Morse in the top of the seventh, Vani drove him in on a ground-rule double to break the standoff and give the Brown and Gold the lead. With one out, Cassara found the other side of the left field fence, extending the visitor lead to three.

The Panthers tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth for good measure, continuing to hold their opponents scoreless from the third inning on.

The baseball program returns to action this weekend when they host back-to-back Northeast-10 doubleheaders. Accompanying their first twinbill against Saint Anselm on Saturday, March 25, the program and athletic department will be honoring the program's All-Americans in between games and hosting an alumni barbeque. All supporters and past players are encouraged to attend. The team will wrap up the weekend with a double feature against Saint Michael's College.
