Manchester, NH - Gordon Purdie, Jr. contributed four points in a No. 7 Adelphi University men's lacrosse narrow 9-8 victory against Southern New Hampshire University Friday afternoon. The Northeast 10 Conference matchup improved the Panthers to 5-1 (3-0 NE10) as the hosts moved to 2-2 this season.
Leading all players with four points was Purdie, behind three goals and one helper.
Ian Kirby chipped in two goals and one assist as four other players contributed solo goals in the win. In goal for Adelphi,
Brendan McDougal improves to 3-0 in conference action with 13 saves. Seven different players from the Penmen scored with Daniel Trainor leading the hosts with two, as the team was held to their lowest scoring contest this season.
The home team was first on the board after two minutes of action and it wasn't until seven minutes later that the Panthers evened the score with a
Chris Racalbuto goal. In that seven-minute span, the visitors managed five shots, three of which were saved by Tyler Walsh, who finished the game with six. Adelphi added three more goals before the first period expired, courtesy of
Nicolas Racalbuto,
Chris Lopez and Purdie, all unassisted.
To open up the second Zach Jacobs added a goal for the home team to cut the Panther lead in half, but a 3-1 advantage for Adelphi kept the hosts at bay. Kirby was responsible for the last goal of the half, giving his team a four-goal lead. In the third quarter of action the visitors were quickly quieted as the Penmen spent much of the frame in their offensive zone, tallying seven shots to the Brown and Gold's three. With the final fifteen minutes on the clock SNHU trailed by just two.
Shane Deboer added another for Adelphi to start the last quarter, but the home team rattled off three consecutive goals to lock the game at eight with under two minutes to play.
Mark Andrejack, who finished the game 12-20 in the faceoff X, came up with the ball at the 1:40 mark and hustled into shooting territory for Adelphi. Connecting at 1:33 was Kirby and Purdie to take the one-goal lead with under two to play. The Penmen had a late chance to get to the other end of the field after Andrejack won the last faceoff of the game, but a turnover sealed the deal for Adelphi, who improves to 5-1 this season.
"It was a great battle that saw two NE10 teams getting after it- both [teams] had opportunities to come away with the win, but it was a great performance by Andrejack to get possession off the faceoff and a great look from Jr. to feed Kirby for the gamewinner," said Head Coach
Gordon Purdie. "I'm proud of my team for the strong defensive effort that held a very good team to their lowest scoring this season at eight goals."
Up next for the men's lacrosse program, the Panthers take on Saint Michael's College on Saturday, March 25 in Colchester, VT. Opening faceoff is scheduled for noon.
