Baseball Sweeps Merrimack, 9-3 and 7-6, in First Double-Header of the Season

Boca Raton, Fla. -- Four hits and five RBIs from Eric Hassell helped power the Adelphi University baseball team to a sweep in its first double-header of the season on Thursday, as the Panthers downed the Merrimack College Warriors, 9-3 and 7-6, on the campus of Lynn University in Florida.

Game 1
The offense stayed hot in game one of the double-header, pounding out nine runs and 11 hits in the win. Ed Baram, now 2-1 on the season, stalled the Warrior offense on the day, tossing six innings, surrendering just two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four.

The bulk of the production came from the top four in the order, as they combined for six of the 11 hits and seven of the runs scored. Hassell drove in four runs in the opener, while Steven Withers, Brett Malm and Brandon Morse had multiple hit days at the plate.

The Brown and Gold (8-4) stayed consistent, scoring in the first inning for the third straight game on a ball that was smoked down the third base line by Malm, sending two home. Hassell hit a ball to the opposite field, allowing Michael Cattani to score and give Adelphi a three run lead after the first inning. The Panthers crossed the plate in the second once, after Withers kept the inning going on a two-out single through the right side. Cattani singled through short and third to secure the RBI and extend the Adelphi lead to 4-0.

After being shut down in the third, the offense got back at it in the fourth, as another two-out rally started by Cattani led to a two-run double off the bat of Hassell to right center, giving the Brown and Gold a 6-0 lead. The Panthers would pour in three more runs over the last four innings, on five hits.

Merrimack (4-8) scored three runs on the afternoon, with two of those coming in the top half of the sixth, as the Warriors put together three hits and capitalized on two Panther errors. A double off the bat of the designated hitter, Cam DiSarcina, led to a groundout to short and RBI from Mike Hoalcraft, before the second run came in on a RBI-single from Matthew Ronai.

Garrett Hudson started the game for the Warriors, as he lasted six innings and gave up seven runs (four earned) on three walks and five strikeouts. Joe Westerman, a junior, threw the remaining two innings, allowing Adelphi to score two runs on four hits.

Game 2
The second game of the double dip consisted of a back and forth affair, as Adelphi led 6-2 before late hits from Hassell and Thomas Colombo helped fuel a one-run seventh inning to secure the 7-6 victory.
The Panthers kept their streak of scoring in the first inning alive, as they put an early run on the board to give starting pitcher, Daniel Taggart, a bit of a cushion before taking the hill. A single from Cattani led to an RBI-double off the bat of Hassell, who went 3-for-3 on the game.

The Warriors put up two runs in the third to tie the game at that point, off an RBI-triple from Tyler Lyne and RBI-single off the bat of the designated hitter DiSarcina. DiSarcina found his groove at the plate, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the game. Adelphi answered in the fourth as Hassell led off with a single, before Tyler Becker laced a ball in the right center gap for a RBI-triple. An error allowed the Panthers to score two more, while Withers tagged a single to center field to cap off the four-run inning.

The Warriors came back strong in the sixth inning, as Matt Ronai and Chris Cimmino hit back-to-back singles before Paul Buckley executed a perfect squeeze bunt to put a run on the board. Two more singles from Petrone and DiSarcina helped Merrimack tie the game in the inning, 6-6.

Tucker Lord's defense failed him on the afternoon, as he allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Two shutout innings from Stephen Fleury helped keep Merrimack close, and fueled the eventual comeback to tie the game in the sixth, before losing the game in the seventh.

Taggart lasted 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, one walk and one strikeout. Senior Chris Lemorocco tossed 1.1 perfect innings, not allowing a hit or run, while striking out three. Andrew Sesto closed the door for the Panthers on 1.2 innings pitched, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

The Brown and Gold head back to Lynn University tomorrow, March 17, for the first of two against nationally-ranked Lynn University at 3 pm.
