Boca Raton, Fla. -- The Adelphi University baseball team saw its four-game winning streak in Florida come to an end on Friday, as the 15th-ranked Fighting Knights from Lynn University out-slugged the Panthers, 15-2.
Robert Vani cracked his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right, for Adelphi's (8-5) only runs of the game, while Lynn's (19-7) Karl Ellison drove in five as one of seven Fighting Knights to record an RBI in the game.
After three scoreless innings for both teams, the Fighting Knights put up three on the back of Ellison's two-run double and a Frank Grandinette groundout. Adelphi was turned aside in the top of the fifth with the tying run at the plate, after the
Lawrence Cicileo double and a walk to
Steven Withers, and the home team responded with two more on an Ellison two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
The home team broke the game open in the seventh, with eight runs on seven hits -- three for extra bases, including a three-run homer for Miguel Ceballos, that put the game out of reach. After Cicileo led off with a single, pinch-hitter Vani came to the plate with two down, launching the ball over the right field fence to break up the shutout.
The Panthers close out their Florida trip on Saturday, March 18, with a 2 pm single game against Lynn in the second of two.
