Bats Stay Hot for Baseball in Second Win Over Caldwell in Florida, 10-2

Lantana, Fla. -- Day two of the two-game series against Caldwell went just as smoothly as the first, as the Adelphi University baseball team poured in 10 runs on 10 hits in a 10-2 victory, putting them at a 6-4 record through their first ten games.

Matthew O'Connor started on the rubber for Adelphi with an eye on redeeming himself after his last start ended early due to dehydration. O'Connor did just that as he threw seven strong shutout innings, allowing six hits, while striking out eight. Brett Malm, Robert Vani, Kory Cassara and Zack Levinson all showed some pop at the dish this evening, having two hits apiece, while Malm drove in four and hit a three-run homer, his first of the season, over the left field fence as part of a four-run eighth inning.

The offense waited no time to place a crooked number on the board, as a leadoff walk by Withers led to a RBI-single off the bat of Malm. Senior captain Vani got into a perfectly-executed rundown play later in the inning, which allowed Malm to score after he had stolen third on the pitch prior. With these productive plays, Adelphi gave O'Connor a 2-0 lead before throwing a pitch. The Brown and Gold added another three runs in the top of the second inning, as Michael Stack, Cassara and Levinson hit back-to- back-to- back singles, while Michael Cattani showed his kill in executing a perfect slash bunt, helping to propel the offense and extend their early lead to 5-0.

The Cougars added two runs in the eighth inning, as an error led to three straight singles off the bat of Justin Jeannette, Richard Metro, and Kevin Goldman, with Metro and Goldman securing the RBIs. Zach Endursby, the starting pitcher for the Cougars, settled in after allowing the five early runs. He allowed just one run over the next five innings, stalling the Panther offense until Endursby was relieved by John Franco in the eighth, while Raymond Ramos threw a scoreless ninth for Caldwell.

After an off day tomorrow, the Panthers head to Lynn University on Thursday, March 16 for a double-header against NE10 opponent, Merrimack. First pitch is set for 11 am.
