Davie, Fla. -- The Adelphi Panthers put on an offensive show tonight against Caldwell University, pouring in 18 runs on 17 hits and picking up a win against the Caldwell Cougars to snap a two-game skid in Florida.
TJ Santiago started for the Panthers (5-4), keeping the Caldwell offense off the board for five of the seven innings that he pitched on the evening and getting Adelphi back above .500. Allowing just two runs on five hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks, Santiago improved his record to 3-0 on the season with this performance.
Freshman Jason Salva made the first start of his young career this evening, lasting 2.1 innings, while allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits and four walks for Caldwell (2-4). He was relieved by Christopher Cerf and Dorion Williams who combined their efforts to finish the final 5.2 innings, allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
Big offensive days from the likes of
Steven Withers,
Eric Hassell and
Zack Levinson helped propel the Adelphi offense with three hits each.
Michael Cattani,
Brett Malm and
Brandon Morse poured in two hits each, combining for eight of the team's 18 runs.
The bulk of the scoring began in the third inning as the Brown and Gold put a seven spot on the board on just three hits, as five Panthers walked in the inning, while Caldwell put three errors on the board to assist the high-volume inning. Adelphi kept its foot on the gas, as
Brandon Morse led the fourth inning off with a double to center field, which was followed by a 2-RBI single off the bat of Withers to add to the four run inning. The Brown and Gold proceeded to score in two of the following four innings, adding two in the fifth and three in the seventh.
The Adelphi University baseball team looks to keep the momentum going tomorrow, as they face Caldwell for the second game of a double dip at 6 pm.
