Miami Gardens, Fla. -- The Adelphi University baseball team was out-gunned in a pair of high-scoring contests on day two of its swing through Florida on Saturday, falling to Wilmington (Del.) and St. Thomas University by the scores of 13-9 and 14-2 respectively, on the STU campus.
The pitching staff had a tough time in both outings, hitting 13 batters through the two games and surrendering a total of 25 hits on 27 runs scored. The offense, similarly, was stalled by the opposing staff for a majority of the 18 innings played on the day, as they were held scoreless in 12.
Game 1, vs. Wilmington
Eleven hit batters and 11 Wilmington hits led to 13 runs and a hole fairly difficult to dig out of for Adelphi in game one of the two-game day, as
Troy Simpson started on the bump for Adelphi (4-3), allowing three earned runs over 1/3 of an inning, before being relieved by Daniel Lotito.
The Wilmington (6-5) offense generated their scoring in a different fashion, as all six Panther pitchers hit at least one batter on the day, allowing the Wildcats to kick-start multiple run innings in four of the nine. Rocky Ferrier and Mike Annone both had two hit days, while Lance Gilbert, Frank Nigro and Jessie Long added two RBIs each.
The Wildcats' highest output of runs came in the third inning, as Gilbert stroked a double down the right field line, leading to runs on a wild pitch, a 2-RBI double by Long and RBI-single off the bat of Ferrier for four total runs.
The starting pitcher for Wilmington, Sean Deely, held the Panther offense at bay, going for five innings and allowing just one run (unearned) on two hits with four strikeouts.
The Panther reserves gave Wilmington's bullpen some trouble starting in the seventh, as
Kevin Krippel and
Lucas Terwilliger hit a single and double respectively to help produce a five-run inning in the seventh.
Tyler Warshefskie added to the scoring as well with a double over the center fielder's head, before
Tyler Becker hit a triple to right center.
The scoring concluded in the seventh with a RBI-single off the bat of
Thomas Colombo. The Panthers proceeded to score three runs over the remaining two innings, only to come up short in the loss.
Game 2, vs. St. Thomas (NAIA)
Adelphi (4-4) fell to .500 on the season after surrendering 14 runs on 14 hits against NAIA St. Thomas University (19-8) in the second game of the day. St. Thomas' Oscar Rodriguez dazzled in the contest, going 5-for- 5, while scoring three runs, driving in three and drawing a walk. German Morales also added three RBI's on a 2-for-5 day.
A first batter walk, throwing error by Steve Kuhn, and hit batter led to a two run first inning for St. Thomas, who didn't look back after.
Adelphi put up a threat in the third, as Michael Cattani hit a ball that looked sure to clear the left field wall, before the left fielder robbed the probable game-tying 2-run home run.
St. Thomas put up another five spot in the fourth inning, on three hits and an error by the Panther defense. Almost identical numbers were performed by St.Thomas in the seventh, as they added another five runs on four hits and an error.
St. Thomas starter, Kenny Roder, threw a gem, surrendering just six hits, two runs (one earned), eight strikeouts and a walk over a complete game effort. He shut down the Panther offense for most of the evening, as the only earned run that crossed the plate came on a laser in the gap off the bat of
Brett Malm in the ninth inning.
The Panthers return to the diamond on Monday, March 13 at 6 pm against Caldwell University on the campus of Broward Community College after an off-day tomorrow.
