Miami Gardens, F.L.- After a slow start on the offensive end, the Adelphi University baseball team piled eight runs on eight hits in the sixth inning to push themselves to a 10-4 win over Stonehill College. The victory improves the Panthers to 2-0 on their southern swing, as they stand at 4-2 overall. The Skyhawks fall to 4-9 as they wrap up their trip down south tomorrow afternoon.
Big offensive outputs from
Brandon Morse and
Camden Orologio, who both went 3-for-4 at the plate, contributed to the team total 14 hits in the victory.
Brett Malm and
Eric Hassell also posted multiple hits, combining for three runs. Matt O'Connor started the game on the bump, giving up three runs on five hits over 2.1 innings before being relieved by freshman,
Tom Ambrosino. The next three hurlers, a trio of
Michael Tarpey,
David Butler and
Michael Demarest held the Skyhawks scoreless from the fourth through the ninth, surrendering just two hits in that time.
Stonehill was quick to get on the board, as a single up the middle from Harrison Sabo plated two runs in the top of the first inning. The Panthers were retired nearly in order after
Steven Withers reached after being hit by a pitch, but was caught stealing once on the base paths. Adelphi was able to work out of the second when the Skyhawks managed to leave two in scoring position and evened the score at two apiece with an Orologio single down the left field line.
The visitors added one more before the third was through, turning the game into a pitchers duel as both teams were held scoreless through the top of the sixth. The Brown and Gold exploded at the plate in the bottom half, adding eight runs on eight hits. Hassell scored on a wild pitch and Morse allowed Adelphi to take the lead with a two-run homer -- Orologio homered two batters later extending the home team lead and forcing a pitching change for the Skyhawks.
Adelphi only gave up one more run through the last few innings, due to errors in the field. Fortunately the offense put up enough of a cushion to keep Stonehill at bay and come away with the win.
The baseball program is back in action on Saturday, March 11, for a doubleheader featuring Wilmington (Del.) and St. Thomas University, respectively. First pitch of game one is slated for 2:00 p.m.
Notes:
-The Panthers have now compiled 26 runs over two games in Florida, doubling their opponents, while surrendering 13.
