Starting Five Shares the Wealth in #14 Women's Basketball's 72-63 Win Over Saint Rose

Albany, N.Y. -- Hitting the road for the first time in a week, all five starters scored in double figures for the Adelphi University women's basketball team on Wednesday night to lead the 14th-ranked Panthers to a victory against the College of Saint Rose, 72-63.

A pair of Panthers picked up double-doubles in the win, as Simone Hobdy had a career night for Adelphi (21-3, 16-1 NE10), pacing all scorers with a career-high 18 points and recording a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Calli Balfour chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sierra Clark chipped in 17 points on offense and six blocks on defense, while Julia Gnieser chipped in 12 points and Sierra Schrader sank a trio of three-pointers en route to 11 total points. For Saint Rose (12-11, 7-10 NE10), sophomore guard Ashley Vanderwall led the Golden Knights with 15 points.

With the two sides evenly matches in the early minutes, a Schrader layup tied the game at six before Gnieser scored a pair of buckets on consecutive possessions, one on a fastbreak layup off a steal by Balfour and the second on her first three of the night, to give Adelphi an 11-6 advantage with 6:57 left in the first. A 10-3 Adelphi stretch, anchored by a pair for treys from Hobdy and Schrader lengthened the Adelphi lead to eight in the waning minutes of the opener, 21-13, before the Golden Knights scored the last four of a high-scoring first frame to trail 21-17.

The Brown and Gold stamped authority on the contest in the second period, as Hobdy scored the first six points of the frame to lead an 11-0 scoring run for the visitors over nearly six minutes which saw their lead grow to 32-17 with 4:07 on the clock. After being fouled on a three, Gnieser sank all three attempts from the line to expand the lead to a game-high 18 with 2:27 to play, but the Golden Knights responded with seven of the last eight points to trip the gap to 12 at the half, 38-26.

The hosts' momentum continued to start the second half, as their scoring run expanded to 16-3 overall and 9-2 to start the third period, cutting the deficit to five on a Taylor Nazon layup, 40-35. However, Adelphi responded with nine of the next 11 points, as Clark tallied six total and Gnieser sank a second three, to push the Adelphi lead back to 12, 49-37 with 4:42 left on the clock. The double-digit lead for Adelphi stood for nearly the duration, before Zoe McDonald sank a putback off the offensive rebound as time expired to cut the Golden Knights' deficit to nine, 52-43.

A Schrader three kicked off the offense for both teams in the final period, which saw the two sides score a combined 40 points, but the Panthers had an answer for every Golden Knight run over the final 10 minutes, with the hosts unable to draw closer than seven for the duration of the contest.

The Panthers are back in action at home on Saturday, Feb. 11, when they welcome the Chargers of the University of New Haven into the CRS at 1:30 pm on Alumni Day.
