Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University women's basketball team swept the season series from the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon inside the Center for Recreation and Sport, never trailing en route to a 65-52 Northeast-10 Conference victory on home floor.
Sierra Clark led all scorers with 23 points on 10-18 shooting from the floor, with 16 of those points coming in the first half to put Adelphi ahead by double-figures at the break. She was joined in the scoring by three who pumped in 12 points, as
Simone Hobdy,
Sierra Schrader and
Calli Balfour all scored in double digits for the second straight game for the Panthers (22-3, 17-1 NE10) with Schrader and Hobdy combining to pull down 15 rebounds. Katia Oge and Alexandria Kerr combined for 27 points, nine rebounds and four steals in defeat for the Chargers (6-17, 4-13 NE10).
The Brown and Gold scored eight of the first nine points of the game, setting the tone in a contest in which the Panthers led for all but 12 seconds. An 8-0 spurt, with all the scoring done by Clark and Hobdy, cemented Adelphi's authority at 16-3 in the opening quarter, but the Chargers hit back with seven of the next nine, including the final three buckets of the first to make it an 18-10 game at the close of the first 10 minutes. Some timely free throw shooting saw the visitors cut the lead to as little as six early in the second period, but a deep Schrader trey kicked off an 11-2 run at the six-minute mark and saw Adelphi establish a 33-18 lead, on a
Niajah Morgan jumper with 2:34 on the clock. From that point, the Charger defense stepped up, and held Adelphi without a basket while scoring the final four points to cut the lead to 11 at halftime.
While Adelphi's lead teetered in the high teens for much of the third quarter, the Blue and Yellow cut it to a 10-point game headed to the fourth, behind nine of the final 10 points of the period. Nonetheless, Adelphi responded in kind and ripped off the first 10 points of the final period, including going a perfect 6-6 at the free throw line, to quell the Chargers' comeback attempt.Â
The Brown and Gold are back in action for the regular season finale against Le Moyne, in the CRS at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Prior to the start of the game, the team will honor its three seniors:
Sierra Clark,
Sierra Schrader and
Calli Balfour.
