Garden City, N.Y. -- On Saturday, Jan. 28, over 200 people gathered in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom inside the Ruth S. Harley University Center to celebrate 70 years of Adelphi University men's lacrosse.
The night featured reflections and speeches from
Danny McCabe, Adelphi president Dr. Christine M. Riordan, while Purdie served as emcee alongside passed hors d'oeuvres and drinks. Former Adelphi players and coaches Lou Flego ('55), Kevin Sheehan, Bob Engelke ('79), Bob Quinn ('86) and Matt Schomburg ('04) all took to the dais and delivered their memories of their time with the Panther program.
"Our 70th anniversary celebration was a huge success, and I was thrilled to see so many former players, coaches and teammates," said head coach
Gordon Purdie, himself also an alumnus of the program. "I would like to thank everyone who attended and participated in the program, with a special thanks to those coaches and players who shared memories and stories of our history. As an alumnus, a coach and now a current parent, I truly feel blessed to be part of this family."
The Adelphi men's lacrosse program has won 497 games in the past 70 years and an NCAA Division II-record seven National Championships. The Panthers have also earned an NCAA-best 18 trips to the Division II Tournament, posting a record of 18-9 with five second-place finishes and three third-place showings, while making four appearances at the Division I level with a record of 2-4.
"This was a great event for our men's lacrosse program," said McCabe. "We were thrilled to welcome back alumni from every era in our history, as our men's lacrosse program has a rich history and tradition of success. The dedication to the program from our former players, parents and staff will allow us to continue our legacy both now and in the future."
