Garden City, N.Y. -- Seven scoreless innings from
TJ Santiago and timely hitting from
Eric Hassell and
Michael Stack gave the Adelphi University baseball team a 5-2 Opening Day victory over the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Bonomo Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Santiago allowed just two hits and fanned nine over seven scoreless innings, with two walks, getting the win in his first outing of the season. Hassell and Stack each drove in a pair of runs as they went a combined 5-7 at the plate with a run scored, while
Andrew Sesto picked up the save in his first game as a Panther, getting Adelphi (1-0) out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the eighth before the game was called due to darkness. Michael Morgan homered for the Spartans (2-1), who were ranked No. 21 in the latest edition of the National Baseball Writers' Association's (NBWCA) Division II media poll.
As Santiago matched zeros with Spartans' starter Frankie Moscatiello, he worked in and out of his major inning of trouble in the fourth, getting around a single and a two-out walk to Bobby Morse on a 13-pitch at bat with a strikeout of Giovanni Dingcong to end the frame. Adelphi duly responded for him in the bottom of the inning, as Hassell singled to center and advanced into scoring position as the center fielder misplayed the ball, before
Brett Malm was plunked with one out to put two on for Stack. Stack, who went 3-3 at the plate in the game, duly stroked a double to right center to score both runners, despite getting thrown out at third on the play.
Michael Cattani created Adelphi's third run with his legs in the sixth, singling to lead off before stealing second and advancing to third on a botched pick-off with Hassell at the plate. One batter later, Vani drove him in with a single up the middle for the game's third run, and after Santiago retired the side in order in his final inning, Adelphi went right back to work in the bottom of the seventh. Walks to
Brandon Morse,
Steven Withers and Cattani by two different Spartan relievers loaded the bases, before Hassell cashed in with a single to right for two RBI and the 5-0 lead.
Morgan led off the eighth with a shot over the right field fence against Mike Demearest, before a throwing error on a fielder's choice and a walk loaded the bases with one out and put the tying run on deck. Demearest yielded to Sesto, who induced the second out on a ground ball to third for the force, scoring a run, before getting Devel Del Priore to ground out to Withers deep behind the bag at third for the game's final play before the umpires' decision.
The Panthers are back in action with a double-header on Friday afternoon, hosting NE10 rival Franklin Pierce. First pitch is slated for 12 pm.
