Baseball Ousted by Franklin Pierce, 7-3

Garden City, N.Y.- The Adelphi University baseball team appeared back on their home field for a cross-divisional game featuring Franklin Pierce University Thursday afternoon. Despite blustering winds and cold temperatures, the teams played through nine, with the Ravens (3-3) coming out on top with a 7-3 decision over the Panthers (1-1).

Brandon Morse drove was responsible for two runs on 3-4 hitting at the plate, as only four other teammates registered one hit on the afternoon. The visiting Ravens put up 12 hits to the Panthers seven and took advantage of the hosts four errors in the field en route to victory.

Franklin Pierce knocked in two runs in the second frame on two hits, stranding two on base as the Brown and Gold defense worked out of the inning with starter Ed Baram on the mound. With two outs in the bottom half of the inning Morse cut the deficit to one with a solo shot over the right field fence. The Ravens were held scoreless through the fourth but added one in the fifth, as the home team struggled to string anything together. Zack Levinson started off the bottom of the fifth with a single, followed by a Steven Withers walk with no outs. A wild pitch advanced both runners, but a pitching change for FPU shut down any momentum for the hosts.

Three singles, coupled with back-to-back doubles in the top of the sixth stretched the Crimson and Grey lead to six. Michael Stack used his speed and an error from second base to reach in the bottom of the inning, and advanced courtesy of a Morse double down the left field line. Kory Cassara plated Stack with an RBI ground out, and Morse crossed home when Tyler Becker reached on an error from the shortstop, bringing the Panthers back within four.

The teams were kept quiet for the remainder of the game but the damage was already done, despite two scoreless innings from lefty-hurler Michael Ceparano who allowed just one hit and struck out two.

The team returns for a single game against the Ravens on Friday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. on William J. Bonomo Field.
