Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 12 Men's Lacrosse Tops No. 16 LIU Post in Home Opener

Garden City, N.Y. - With the help of a season-high 13 saves from Brendan McDougal, the No. 12 Adelphi University men's lacrosse program took a 9-6 decision from No. 16 LIU Post Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (2-1) held the Pioneers (2-3) scoreless in the third en route to the non-conference win. Offensively, the team was led by Ian Kirby who accounted for four points behind two goals and two helpers. Also adding two goals was Nicolas Racalbuto, as five different teammates each added a goal. In the face-off "X", Mark Andrejack got out to a slow start, however, ended the contest going 12-for-19. For the Pioneers, Austin Guerrina was responsible for two goals.

The visiting Pioneers took a 2-1 lead after the opening five minutes in the first frame, with the lone goal for Adelphi coming from John Arcidiacono. The remainder of the quarter was spent in both offensive ends, despite seven turnovers combined from both teams. Andrejack won the first two faceoffs in the second quarter to help push the Panthers their first lead with goals from Gordon Purdie, Jr. and Gerard Cunnigham. This pressure sparked a 4-0 run in favor of the hosts, who held on to a two-goal lead as the half came to a close.

Despite five shot attempts from LIU opening the third quarter, the Panthers extended their lead on a Quintin Mckenna goal, his first of the season and the only goal scored by either team in the frame. In the last 15 minutes of action Michael Osmundsen connected twice with Racalbuto less than 30 seconds apart to run up the score to 9-4. The Pioneers capitalized on a man-up situation, scoring at the 7:50 mark and again when leading-scorer Dylan Harned netted his 12th of the season. The home team controlled possesion for much of what was left in the fourth, pulling away with a 9-6 home-opening win.

"Coming off a loss down south, we were looking to find our feet back up north- We knew that we wanted to push the ball at times, which we were successful at doing today," commented Head Coach Gordon Purdie. "Defensively we had a great game, shutting them down to two goals in the second half and we wanted to stay out of the penalty box."

The Panthers will open up Northeast-10 conference action on Saturday, March 4, when they host American International College on Motamed Field at 1:00 p.m.
