Irvine, Calif. -- For just the ninth time in over 1,800 games in program history, the Adelphi University softball team had a game end in a tie, as game two in Wednesday's double-header at Concordia (Calif.) was called for darkness in the seventh inning with the score even, 2-2.
Previously, the Panthers (1-4-1) were unable to hold a 5-2 lead in the first game of the day, falling 6-5 to the Eagles (8-5-2).
The tie is the first for the program since March 11, 2012, on which date a game between Adelphi and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) played to a 0-0 tie after five innings of play in Kissimmee, Fla., in a game that was called due to rain and unplayable conditions.
Brenna Martini launched a pair of two-run homers across the double-header, having now homered in three straight contests to begin 2017, for a 4 RBI day at the plate.
Nicole Camera drove in a pair with a fourth inning single in the opener, while
Krista King recorded a pair of hits in the leadoff spot in each game, scoring three runs with an RBI.
Game 1
After Adelphi was unable to create a run out of a pair of walks in the first, the Eagles scratched out a pair of runs against
Kristin Fealy in their first turns at bat. A steal, an error and a fielder's choice led to Concordia's first run, while another steal and an error led to the second run scoring on the throw. Fealy managed to limit the damage from there, getting two fly outs to leave the bases loaded, and bounced back to retire the side in order in the second.
Adelphi tied things up in the third, as King led off with a double to right, before Martini hit her second home run of the season over the left field fence to knot the score 2-2. Adelphi was unable to score more after a two-out double from
Lauren Sandelier, but that was not for long as the Panthers put up a three-spot in the fourth. Pinch hitter
Emily Turney walked to lead off, before
Danielle Cutuli hustled off a bunt to reach on the fielder's choice as Turney was safe. From there, King stroked a double down the left field line to score Turney to take the lead, and Camera followed by driving in two with a single up the middle two batters later. The Panthers had a chance for more in the inning, as the bases were loaded when
Nicoletta Cuccio reached on a fielder's choice and Sandelier walked, but Grayson Harvey struck out
Megan Lewis and
Stephanie Staiano to end the frame.
CUI quickly hit back in the bottom of the frame, as two singles to lead off chased Fealy to give way to Jessia Vadala in relief. After recording the first out, the Eagles got a run back on a fielding error, but Vadala was one out away from getting out of a bases-loaded jam after recording a strikeout two batters later. Nonetheless, a fielder's choice led to two runs, before a groundout stranded two to end the inning.
The Eagles were back at it in the sixth, as two singles to begin the frame put Vadala in trouble, before a pair of walks led to the go-ahead run. While the damage was limited to one, Adelphi was retired on three fly ball outs in the seventh to drop game one.Â
Game 2
After
Lindsay Mapes and BethAnn McCann traded zeros over the first four innings, the Panthers broke through first again, as a two-out infield hit for King brought Martini to the plate once again. Just like the first game, the junior launched a pitch over the fence in left with her classmate on base to give the Brown and Gold a 2-0 lead.Â
A leadoff walk got Mapes in trouble to begin the bottom of the sixth, and designated player Amanda Gjertsen made the Panthers pay, launching a no-doubter of her own over the wall to tie the game at 2-2. While Adelphi looked ready to rally to take the lead in the top of the seventh, as a pair of errors and a
Kailah Konkel single loaded the bases, the Panthers ran out of daylight, forcing the game to be called in a 2-2 tie.
The Panthers take a travel day tomorrow, as they head to Dixie State for a three-game series in St. George, Utah to close out their season-opening week out west. Friday's single game is slated for a 3 pm MT first pitch (5 pm EST).
