St. George, Utah -- In a meeting between two NFCA top 25 teams to begin the season, #20 Dixie State turned 10 hits and three Adelphi errors into a 10-0 triumph in the first game of a three-game set on Friday afternoon.
Brenna Martini continued her hot-hitting start to the season for Adelphi (1-5-1), ranked #9 this week in the NFCA national poll, as she went 2-3 at the plate, raising her average to .444 over the first week of the season. Rounding out Adelphi's five hits were
Krista King,
Lauren Sandelier and
Christina Rizzi, while Rizzi and
Fallon McCarthy both worked out walks for the Panthers.
After a scoreless first inning, the Trailblazers (13-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with four straight hits, a walk and a fielder's choice that resulted in three runs. Dixie State added two more runs in the third inning, scoring the first on an Arista Honey
RBI triple to right, before Riley Tyteca later
stole home on a double steal play later in the inning to push the DSU advantage to 5-0.
The Trailblazers sealed the game in the fourth inning, turning three hits and two Adelphi errors into five runs. Bassett scored the first run of the frame on a throwing error from left field, followed by an RBI walk by Tyteca. Gaffin brought two more runs in during the ensuing at-bat, driving a sharp single off the pitcher's glove and into right field. Tyteca later scored on a fielding error to push the lead to eventual final score of 10-0.
Dixie State and Adelphi will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at noon local time (2 pm EST) on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field.
