Lakeland, Fla. - On Tuesday evening, the No. 2 Adelphi women's lacrosse team got the opportunity to avenge the 2016 national championship game loss to Florida Southern and they did so in convincing fashion.
The Panthers (2-0) used a five-goal, first-half rally to get breathing room and cruised to a 12-5 win over the top-ranked Mocs (1-1).
Jacqueline Jahelka and
Kate Beier accounted for 75 percent of the Brown and Gold's scoring, with four goals apiece in the win. Also assisting on offense was
Alison Johnson, who led the team with seven points behind five assists and two goals. Defensively, Kaitlin Stackpole notched four caused turnovers and in goal,
Hailey Peterson was responsible for nine saves.
The Panthers managed to get on the board first with a goal four minutes into the first half after several attempts at the goal.
Alison Johnson found Jahelka at 26:00 to make it a 1-0 contest. The hosts were able to even the score with a free position shot less than a minute later and then took the lead with with a Casey O'Brien goal at 22:32.
Kate Beier got in on the scoring action with her first of the game to knot the game at 2-2, as the visitors took the lead when Johnson found a way past Taylor Gillis.
Adelphi added three more goals before the home team was able to get a chance in their offensive end. Kendall Kerge scored for the Mocs with under five minutes remaining in the opening half, her first of two in the contest.
The Panthers kept the pressure up in the second half, with goals from Jahelka and Michele Scannell out of halftime to make it 8-3. After Florida Southern cut the lead to 8-5 with 15:29 remaining, Adelphi went on a four-goal rally to end the game. Beier was responsible for two of the final four goals as Kole Pollock joined in the scoring and Jahelka added one more to her stat line.
Adelphi won 15 of 19 draw controls and out-shot Florida Southern 29-18.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, March 8 when they open up Northeast-10 Conference action at American International College.
