Reading, Pa. -- After ending the first two days at the top of the leaderboard, the Adelphi University women's bowling team rolled to a third place finish at the Golden Bear Classic hosted by Kutztown University over the weekend.
Adelphi posted an 11-2 record overall in the Baker tournament, including a 5-0 mark on day one and a 9-1 mark by the end of day two of competition.
Rebecca Gotterbarn and
Lena Sorrentino were standouts for the Panthers individually, both earning inclusion on the All-Tournament team with Gotterbarn earning MVP honors.Â
Adelphi's perfect day on Friday came in dominant fashion, as the Brown and Gold picked up wins over Saint Peter's, Wilmington, Coppin State, Chestnut Hill and East Coast Conference rival Franklin Pierce. The Panthers contested the closest match of the day with the Ravens, but edged out a 934-883 decision to remain perfect and close out the first day's play.Â
The Panthers' win streak hit seven matches in a row for the tournament on Saturday, as they defeated Roberts Wesleyan and Felician before suffering their first setback of the tournament in incredibly close fashion in the eighth round, with Duquesne taking the win by a margin of just six pins, 913-907. Nonetheless, Adelphi quickly got back on the winning track and secured the last three matches of the second day's play, over the hosts Kutztown and Morgan State to head into the final day at the top of the standings.Â
To open play on Sunday, the Panthers defeated Caldwell to set up another meeting with their weekend nemesis Duquesne. In that match, the Dukes again had their number, handing Adelphi just its second setback of the tournament. However, the Brown and Gold finished strong, defeating Morgan State for the second time in the weekend to take third place for the tournament overall.Â
Out of the four Panthers who started all 13 matches, Gotterbarn posted a 20.95 frame average to lead the team, with Sorrentino close behind with a 19.9 frame average. Also performing well for the Panthers was
Jackie Castelli, who average a 20.1 frame average across her six starts and seven appearances.Â
The Panthers are back in action in two weeks, sticking close to home at the Molloy College Invite in Mineola, N.Y. from Feb. 25-26.
NOTES
- Adelphi posted its second straight top five finish, having finished in fourth place overall in its last tournament at the Red Flash Invite.
