Women's Basketball Sunk by Saint Rose on the Road, 69-58

Albany, N.Y. - Unable to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped a 69-58 decision on the road to the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday night.

Getting the start for the first time in six games, Adelphi (4-6, 2-3 NE10) guard Fallyn Stephens net a game-high 23 points on 8-18 shooting from the floor, tying a school record with seven made three-pointers.

The sophomore guard tied the mark set by Tara Flynn ('16) from Feb. 28, 2016, when the then-senior set a new school record in a 93-84 loss to American Int'l in the Northeast-10 Championship quarterfinals.

Isa Vara de Rey and Ashley Vanderwall scored in double figures for the Golden Knights (5-3, 3-3 NE10), while Karissa Birthwright and Zoe McDonald each pulled down 10 rebounds, falling short of double-doubles with nine and seven points, respectively.

The Brown and Gold never led in the contest after getting off to a slow start, falling behind 17-7 at the close of the first quarter. The home team's lead stood at 13 at the close of the first 20 minutes, as the Panthers were left without a field goal following a Katie Murphy three-pointer with 4:36 remaining in the period, and the Golden Knights scored eight of the last 12 points of the period.

The Brown and Gold began to forge a comeback effort in the second half, thanks in part to Stephens heating up from behind the arc, and effective bench scoring from Julia Strachan, who scored eight points in the game.

Scoring the last five points of the third quarter behind an Emily Miccile basket and a Stephens three, the Panthers cut the deficit to single digits for the first time since early in the second quarter, and back-to-back baskets from Miccile cut the deficit to just five points with 7:28 on the clock.

However, the Golden Knights quashed the rising momentum with a stand on defense, forcing turnovers on back-to-back possessions which led to fast break layups and a four-point swing in favor of the home team. That sparked an 8-2 spurt for the home team, which kept the Panthers at arms' length and down by a pair of possessions for much of the duration of the game.

The Panthers will look to break a four-game losing skid on the road in Springfeld, Mass. on Saturday, taking on American Int'l in NE10 action at 1:30 p.m.
