Springfield, Mass. - Facing a 17-point deficit after three quarters of play, the Adelphi University women's basketball team put together the comeback of its season so far, erasing the deficit and coming all the way back to stun the American International College Yellow Jackets in Northeast-10 Conference play, 72-70.
Freshman
Emily Miccile sunk the game-winning basket as time expired off a heaved inbounds pass from
Simone Hobdy, as Adelphi took its first lead of the contest to win the game. On the Panthers' previous offensive possession with 36 seconds on the clock, sophomore sharpshooter
Fallyn Stephens tied the game with a straight-on three pointer off a
Katie Murphy assist, after the freshman point guard corralled a key offensive rebound which kept the drive alive.
A big defensive stand for the Brown and Gold down the other end, with a double-team on the NE10's leading scorer Dana Watts (22 points, 11 rebounds) leading to a missed basket and a team defensive rebound, allowed
Missy Traversi to use a timeout and advance the basketball down court with one second to play.
After the Panthers drew up the play, Hobdy heaved the inbounds pass to a waiting Miccile under the basket, who threw up the shot as time expired and found the hoop to complete the comeback and snap Adelphi's (5-6, 3-3 NE10) four-game skid in stunning fashion.
Stephens found herself as Adelphi's leading scorer for the second straight game, tallying 15 points on six second-half baskets, but just a trio of triples after tying the Adelphi single-game record for made threes in the Panthers' last contest again Saint Rose. All 11 of Miccile's points in the game came in the second half as the freshman totaled 29 bench minutes, to go along with eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Hobdy also totaled double figures, with eight of her 12 points coming in the second half, in addition to seven rebounds and five assists. Watts led four Yellow Jackets (3-7, 1-5 NE10) in double figures, including Rashana Siders (17 points), Alyssa Guyon (14 points) and Nadia Wooten (10 points).
Adelphi's comeback began in the final frame with an 11-2 scoring run, in which Miccile and
Julia Strachan combined for a trio of three-pointers and Hobdy accounted for the fourth basket. The Yellow Jackets largely kept the Brown and Gold at arms' length from there, leading by as much as 13 on a Watts basket with 3:58 remaining in the game.
It was then that the Adelphi comeback began, however, as Stephens herself was responsible for an 8-2 spurt for the Panthers which cut the game to single-digits again, and the Panthers held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for the last 3:21 of the game. Down the other end, the Brown and Gold scored 18 of the last 21 points of the game.Â
The Brown and Gold look to take their momentum back home after a week off, next hosting Caldwell University in a 1:30 p.m. contest on Dec. 16.
