Old Westbury, N.Y. - Behind a team-high 27 points from
Michael Coffey and career-best 19 points from
Nick Cambio, the Adelphi University men's basketball team captured a 91-85 non-conference victory over NYIT Monday evening.
Cambio and Coffey, who combined for 10 rebounds and nearly perfect shooting from the charity stripe, were joined in the dougle-digit category by Conor McGuinness, who was responsible for 18. Coming up short in the point column but making up for it in boards was starter
Terrel Martin-Garcia who finished with a team-high 12 rebounds. For the home team, Jeffrey Hayden scored 49 points, an NYIT men's basketball single-game record.
From the opening tip Adelphi (3-5) commanded the contest, with Coffey scoring the first seven points right off the bat. NYIT (2-5) trailed for much of the first frame, only getting even with the Panthers on back-to-back free throws from Luis Cartagena, Jr. at 9:08. From then on the Brown and Gold continued to pull away, leading by at most 11, courtesy of two free throws from Cambio in the closing seconds.
After the opening 20 minutes, Coffey was responsible for 16 points as Cambio kicked in 10, going a perfect 4-4 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line.
Two straight threes, one from
Daveyon Barnes and the other from
Jack Laffey allowed Adelphi to maintain a double-figure lead seven minutes into the second half. Six unanswered points from the Bears brought them as close as three with four minutes to play, but they were not able to get any closer than that. The Panthers knocked down eight free throws in their last eight attempts, all under the 2:03 mark when Cambio doubled their lead with a three-pointer. Hayden landed a trey of his own at the buzzer, but the deficit was too great, resulting in the visitors' second consecutive win.
The program heads back on the road for a conference matchup with the College on Saint Rose on Wednesday, December 6. The men are scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. following their counterparts contest at 5:30 p.m. against the Golden Knights.
