Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Key Third Quarter Steers Women's Hoops Back to .500 in 69-57 Win at Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. - Playing its first game in nearly two weeks, the Adelphi University women's basketball team used a key 15-point swing in the third period to take a 69-57 non-conference victory at the University of Bridgeport on Friday night.

Trailing 27-22 at the half, having never led after Fallyn Stephens knocked down a three on the game's first possession, Adelphi (7-7) used a staggering 24-9 scoring streak in the third quarter to wrestle control of the game in the second 20 minutes.

The Brown and Gold scored the first five points of the period to tie the game at 27-27, but took the lead for good on Stephens' third triple of the period at 37-36. That basket kicked off a 12-0 run for the Panthers to end the period, turning a two-point deficit into a 10-point lead at 46-36.

Adelphi continued its torrid offensive pace to begin the fourth quarter, scoring 11 of the first 15 of the frame to extend its scoring run to 21-4. The Brown and Gold later took a game-high 17-point lead with 5:30 to go in the game as Stephens scored eight straight points to close the run.

A total of 19 of Stephens' game-high 22 points came in the second half as she helped key the Adelphi comeback, as she shot 7-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range. The sophomore guard has tallied four 20-plus games in scoring this season, including three of the last four.

Flirting with a triple-double in the contest was Simone Hobdy with eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Emily Miccile and Natalie Fekula combined for 18 points and 12 rebounds despite dealing with foul trouble for much of the contest. The Brown and Gold turned around a slow start from the floor in the first half, in which the squad connected on just nine of 37 attempts (24.3%), by shooting 15-for-27 (55.6%) in the second half.

For Bridgeport (4-10), Kadijah Dickson ended the game with 18 points and nine rebounds while Briana Stoddart chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Dickson scored 13 points and hauled in seven of her rebounds over the first 20 minutes, as the host Purple Knights shot 43.5 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes.

The Panthers return to Northeast-10 Conference play in their next game, hosting the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a 5:30 p.m. contest in Garden City on Jan. 3.
