Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Survives Assumption for Third Straight Win, 50-42

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team was forced to dig deep for its third straight victory in its first game of 2018, coming out on top in a gritty, defensive battle against the Assumption College Greyhounds in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night, 50-42.

Held to its second-lowest scoring output of the season, Adelphi's three captains stepped up in a big way, shouldering the load in what proved to be a comeback victory. After leading 22-8 in the second quarter, Adelphi found itself trailing 31-29 at the close of the third, and used a 21-11 scoring edge over the final 10 minutes to squeeze out a victory.

Niajah Morgan proved a bright spot for the Brown and Gold on offense, shooting 7-for-13 from the field for a season-high 17 points, and also chipped in six rebounds, two blocks and a steal. A late push saw Simone Hobdy fall one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Natalie Fekula chipped in six points, eight rebounds and a career-high four blocks.

The Panthers (8-7, 4-3 NE10) scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to double their lead after a slow start. Kiera O'Donnell, who tied Morgan for the game-high lead in scoring with 17 points, broke the silence for Assumption with her trey at 4:08 and added the last basket of the half nearly a minute later.

For the remainder of the half however, both teams were plagued by missed shots and turnovers which resulted in a 22-18 score at the break. Over the first 20 minutes, the Brown and Gold nonetheless shot 43.5 percent from the field, holding its opponents to a sub-20 shooting percentage for the half.
Morgan, who accounted for half of the team's points in the first two quarters was nearly perfect from the field, knocking down five of six shots with the only appearance at the charity stripe for both squads in the first half.

The Greyhounds continued to chip away at the hosts' lead, using a nine-point run out of the gate to tie the contest at 22-all. In total, the Brown and Gold were held scoreless for a stretch of 9:10 over the second and third periods, until a Morgan jumper with 5:39 left in the third put Adelphi back on top at 24-22. However, the Greyhounds continued to keep the pressure on, scoring 11 of the last 16 points to hold the lead after 30 minutes.

Emily Miccile netted an equalizer at 9:28 for the first basket of the fourth, helping Adelphi battle down the stretch to remain at an advantage. Though the two teams would trade baskets in the early minutes of the final frame, a 14-5 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes and down the stretch helped the Brown and Gold hold off the visitors and earn a win.

The women's basketball team is back in action when they hit the road for their first away contest of 2018, at Anselm College on Saturday, Jan. 6. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
