Garden City, N.Y. - Despite another 20-plus scoring effort for
Simone Hobdy, the Adelphi University women's basketball team was unable to contain the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University Owls on Saturday afternoon in the Center for Recreation and Sports, 68-63.
Hobdy continued her torrid week for Adelphi (4-5, 2-2 NE10) setting another career high in scoring behind 24 points, 17 of which came in the opening half aas Adelphi led 30-28 at the break. The senior guard added six rebounds, three assists and a block to her cause, as one of two Panthers in double figures.
Emily Miccile chipped in 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds, but Adelphi was undone in part by a career game for SCSU (6-2, 4-0 NE10) forward Kiana Steinauer, who scored 23 points and hauled in 23 rebounds.
An early offensive attack from the Owls saw them build a 19-12 lead at the close of the first quarter, but Adelphi's press defense limited the visiting team to less than half that output over the second quarter. An 18-9 scoring edge, which began with an early 8-2 spurt and a quarter-ending 10-2 run, gave the Brown and Gold a 30-28 lead at halftime.
To begin the third quarter, however, the Panthers' offense started slowly, going cold from the floor for nearly six minutes, and an eight-point swing put the Owls up by six at the 5:08 mark, 36-30. A
Jess Camarda three-pointer finally broke the ice for Adelphi's third-quarter scoring, but SCSU countered with nine of the final 13 points to stamp an eight-point lead.
Hot-shooting from the Owls end kept the Panthers at bay for much of the fourth, and a 9-2 spurt in the middle of the quarter pulled Adelphi to within three at 55-52 with 3:03 remaining.
As she had all afternoon, however, Steinauer answered - this time with a deep three-pointer - and the Owls won the game at the free throw line, making 10 of their final 13 efforts to ice the game.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday night, hitting the road for a 5:30 p.m. tilt at the College of Saint Rose in NE10 play.
