Garden City, N.Y. - Concluding their 2017 home schedule on a high note, the Adelphi University men's basketball program snapped a five-game losing streak with an 86-82 win against Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon. 

Leading scorer Tavon Ginyard paced the offense with 21 points, which included 7-10 shooting from the charity stripe. Four other Adelphi players reached double-figures with Jack Laffey contributing 14 and Michael Coffey and Terrel Martin-Garcia both chipping in 12. Falling short of a first career triple-double was Conor McGuinness, who's stat line had 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds. 

Southern Connecticut (2-4, 1-3 NE10) started out strong in the early going, but four consecutive shots from beyond the arc sparked a 14-point run for Adelphi (2-5, 1-3 NE10) which put them out to a 22-9 advantage. The hosts largest lead of the half came at 11:38 when Ginyard produced another triple to keep the Panthers in the drivers seat. The Owls used almost 70 percent shooting at the free throw line in the first half to keep the game within reach, but still trailed by nine at halftime. 

McGuinness knocked down a three-pointer in the second frame to give the home team their largest advantage of the contest at 16, a double-digit lead the team was able to maintain over the next four minutes. SCSU committed a 9-2 run midway through the half to cut the Adelphi lead to single digits but a technical foul awarded to the visitor bench on top of a personal foul sent McGuinness to the line, where he sank all four shots to return to a 14-point advantage. 

Timely shooting from three-point land for Southern kept the Owls on the heels of the Panthers, but foul trouble down the stretch sent the home team to the line eight times. Adelphi, despite going 5-8 in free throws under the final two minutes, held on to win 86-82, capturing their first conference victory of the season. 
The team will close out December with seven road games, starting Monday, December 4 when they travel cross-town to take on NYIT in Recreation Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
