Garden City, N.Y. - A 50-point first half, anchored by an explosive 33-16 second quarter, helped lead the Adelphi University women's basketball team to an 84-57 non-conference victory over the Bears of visiting Bloomfield College on Monday night and cap the Panthers' 2017 home schedule.
Adelphi (6-7) scored nine of the last 12 points in the first quarter to take a lead it would never relinquish, but put the game away early with an explosive second quarter, scoring 33 points en route to building a 20-point lead at halftime. The Brown and Gold shot over 50% from the floor (21-for-41) in the first half, sinking seven of 14 attempted triples, and more than doubling its assists (15) to turnovers (7).
An 11-0 run to begin the second quarter which saw buckets from four different Panthers lengthened Adelphi's lead to double figures, and the visiting Bears were unable to draw closer than that margin for the duration of the game.Â
Sophomore sharpshooter
Fallyn Stephens found herself responsible for much of Adelphi's first-half offense, as she scored 17 of her game-high 23 points over the first 20 minutes. The second-year guard from Marion, Ohio made five of her seven triples in the game in the first half, tying a school-best for the second time this season.
Stephens, who also knocked down seven triples in her first 23-point performance of the season at Saint Rose on Dec. 6, shares the mark with former Adelphi guard Tara Flynn ('16), who initially set it on Feb. 28, 2016.
Simone Hobdy added 10 of her 13 for the Panthers in the first half, as she ended the game flirting with a triple-double behind six rebounds and six assists. Also in the territory was
Emily Miccile, who came off the bench to score 10 with seven rebounds and six assists.
Rounding out Adelphi's scorers were
Natalie Fekula, who posted her first double-double the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while
Jess Camarda knocked down four threes of her own for 12 points to go along with five helpers.
For Bloomfield (2-8), Deja Mckenzie scored 21 points with nine rebounds, three steals and a block, while Kiamsha Bynes added 12 points. The Bears scored 13 of the last 17 points of the contest after Adelphi built a game-high 36-point edge (80-44) on a
Julia Strachan layup with 5:24 to go in the fourth.Â
Adelphi next breaks for the holiday and returns to action on Dec. 29 with a 5:30 p.m. non-conference contest at the University of Bridgeport. The Panthers return to the Center for Recreation and Sports in the new year, hosting Assumption College in a 5:30 p.m. game on Jan. 3.
