Volleyball Staves Off SCSU With 3-1 Victory

Garden City, N.Y. - With career-high performances from Victoria Cast and McKenna Clawson, the Adelphi University volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over Southern Connecticut State University Tuesday evening.

Clawson led the team in kills, posting a career-best 25 as Cast chipped in 19 of her own. Pacing the offense was Megan Manierski who collected a double-double with 51 assists and 19 digs. Katarina Warburton led the defense with 28 digs as Stephanie Milillo also recorded a career-best performance with 13 digs. Leading the Owls (20-9, 7-6 NE10) was Alyssa Gage with 21 kills as Gabriela Vazquez and Leanna Jadus both accounted for 11 each.

The first set played out to be a back-and-forth affair, with several ties all the way up to 22-22. A kill from Vazquez sparked a three-point run which was capped by a strike from Clawson to end the set. Adelphi (13-12, 9-3 NE10) used their best hitting percentage of the match to close out the opener, committing just four errors.

The Owls (20-9, 7-6 NE10) fell behind early in the second set after a 4-1 run in favor of the home team pushed them to a 7-4 lead. Southern Connecticut came back with three points of their own, however, to make it even and actually pushed to an advantage at 9-8. The game experienced eight ties before the teams were locked at 22-22 again, before the visiting team captured six of the final eight points to squeak out a 28-26 victory to even the match.

SCSU started out the third frame with momentum, taking a 9-5 lead, but a 4-1 run from the hosts brought them within one as a later attack error started another four-point spray that put the Brown and Gold back in the driver's seat. Every time Southern scored a point, Adelphi came back with two or three, pushing the Owls away with a 25-21 final decision.

Madison Canestrari, who committed no errors in the four-set win, landed a kill that started an 8-1 run to put the Panthers ahead by six. The Blue and White chipped away all the way up to a 21-21 tie, but a final kill from Cast and miscue from the Owl attack tallied the victory in Adelphi's column with a 25-23 set-four win.

Adelphi hits the road for their final two away trips of the regular season. They take on Stonehill College on Friday, November 10 before a quick turnaround to close out the season at Bentley University on Saturday, November 11.
