Panthers Take Merrimack in Straight Sets on Senior Day

Garden City, N.Y. - After celebrating their lone senior, Megan Manierski, the Adelphi University volleyball program proceeded to sweep Merrimack College Friday evening.

The Panthers (12-12, 8-3 NE10) posted a team hitting percentage of .364 for the match and held a 7-1 advantage in team blocks. Victoria Cast led the team with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage as McKenna Clawson and Cara McKenzie both chipped in seven apiece after playing two sets. Manierski, also only playing two sets collected 20 assists as Courtney Crook and Katie Barry coupled for 6 and 8 assists, respectively in the third set.

A kill from Leilani Vazquez sparked a four-point run for Adelphi early in the first that kept the home team ahead, which was later followed up with a 6-1 run from the Panthers who jumped out to a 15-8 lead. Sophia Powless, who finished the contest with four of the host's 12 service aces, added two in the second spurt to allow them to push ahead. Ten of the final 13 points were awarded to the Brown and Gold who pulled away with a first-set victory.

With Katarina Warburton and Stephanie Milillo at the service line, the Panthers once more jumped out to a commanding 11-3 advantage in the second frame. McKenzie pounded back-to-back kills into the floor to keep the momentum going and was later helped at the net with two blocks, both including Powless. Set point came on a kill from Cast, resulting in a 25-12 final decision.

Merrimack didn't go down without a fight however, even taking the lead in the early going of the third set. Adelphi eventually regained  control, but always had the Warriors trailing close behind. Another kill from McKenzie and service ace from Crook sparked a 5-1 run, ultimately ending with three straight kills from the home team to sweep the match.

Adelphi returns to their home court on Tuesday, November 7 for their final regular season home match against Southern Connecticut State University at 7:00 p.m.
