Women's Basketball Staves Off New Haven, 60-55, for First NE10 Win

Garden City, N.Y. - Despite being outscored 36-22 in the second half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team gutted out a 60-55 win over the University of New Haven to open its home slate at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon.

In her fourth career game in the Brown and Gold, Jess Camarda had a hand in pacing the Adelphi (2-2, 1-1 NE10) offense with a team-high 15 points - 13 in the first half - on 5-10 shooting. The sophomore guard added six rebounds, five assists and two steals, sharing the team-high in scoring with Natalie Fekula, who also fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine.

For New Haven (1-2, 0-1 NE10), Allieyah Cubbage had a game-high 21 points, scoring 15 in the second half, while Katia Oge had 12 with three blocks.

Camarda came out hot for the Brown and Gold, scoring eight of Adelphi's first 12 points thanks in part to a pair of triples, as Adelphi built a 12-2 lead to start the game. The Brown and Gold's first half lead stayed steady for much of the second quarter, and the Panthers went to the locker room with a half-high lead of 19 after scoring 11 of the final 13 points before the buzzer, a run which included three-pointers from Camarda, Emily Miccile, and Julia Strachan.

A dominant third quarter for the Chargers saw a 10-point swing in favor of the road team, with the Blue and Gold scoring 18 of the 26 points of the period. After a Fallyn Stephens three with 2:48 on the clock made it a 15-point Panther lead, the Chargers scored the final six points headed to the fourth-period to make it a single-digit deficit.

New Haven whittled the Adelphi lead to five early on in the final frame, but a seven-point swing with four points from Miccile and a triple by Fekula build the Brown and Gold's lead back to 12 with 4:41 on the clock. The Chargers made a final push, scoring 12 of 15 to make it a three-point game (75-72) with 23 seconds on the clock, but a big defensive stand by the Panthers saw Hobdy pull in the rebound with eight seconds left to help seal the win.

The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday night, Nov. 21, taking on the Le Moyne College Dolphins in NE10 action at 5:30 p.m.
