Garden City, N.Y. - A career-high 21 points from sophomore guard
Fallyn Stephens off the bench helped pace the Adelphi University women's basketball team to a 60-52 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Le Moyne College Dolphins on Tuesday night.
Stephens totaled 21 points, smashing her previous career-high of six, set last week in a 67-64 setback to Pace University. The Marion, Ohio native shot 6-14 from the floor, 5-11 from behind the arc, and a perfect 4-4 from the line in just 22 minutes of action.
Adelphi (3-2, 2-1 NE10) was in control from the tip, thanks in part to a sizzling start from
Niajah Morgan, who scored the first eight points of the game, as the Brown and Gold built a 13-0 lead to start the first quarter.
The Brown and Gold continued to connect from the floor, scoring nine of the first 11 points of the second frame to build its lead to 28-9 - thanks in part to timely bench scoring and minutes from
Katie Murphy. The freshman point guard scored four of her six points for the contest in that stretch, and Adelphi held a 14-11 scoring advantage in the quarter to take a 33-18 lead at half.
Stephens put on a show to begin the third period, making three of her first four attempted triples, as Adelphi scored 13 of the first 16 points of the quarter to build a 25-point lead (46-21) with 6:18 on the clock. Le Moyne (2-3, 1-2 NE10) started to battle back from there, outscoring the Brown and Gold 15-6 down the stretch to make it a 16-point contest.
Adelphi's early lead proved enough to hold on to a victory, despite the Dolphins' best efforts - a 10-0 run as Adelphi went cold from the floor for nearly six minutes cut it to a six-point game, but the Green and Gold never got closer than five the rest of the way.
The Panthers are back in action after Thanksgiving, hosting the University of the District of Columbia in a 1:30 p.m. contest on Sunday, Nov. 26.
