Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball dropped its Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday night against the Pace University Setters, 67-64, after the Setters staged a second-half rally on home court.
Adelphi (1-2, 0-1 NE10)Â edged a tight first period with a one-point lead at 15-14, before building what was a 10-point, 37-27 lead at halftime.
Simone Hobdy scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds for the Panthers over the first 20 minutes of play, part of a career-high night for the senior guard behind a new career-best 20 points on 8-16 shooting, and 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double.
However, Pace (3-0, 1-0 NE10) quickly sprinted out of the locker room on a 13-3 run which tied the game at 40-40 with 5:05 left in the period on a Gabriella Rubin three-pointer. Nonetheless, Adelphi steadied to close out the period, largely on the back of Hobdy, as the senior scored the last five points in the last two minutes to give the Brown and Gold a 49-44 edge headed to the fourth.
The Setters again caught fire to begin the frame, scoring the first seven points to wrestle back the lead, extending their scoring run to 15-4 over the first 4:50 of the final period to take a game-high lead of six, 59-53. Adelphi battled until the final buzzer, whittling the lead to one point twice as the Brown and Gold looked to reclaim the lead.
Hobdy laid the ball up and in for two to make it a 62-62 contest with 1:08 on the clock, and a Pace turnover gave Adelphi possession with 35 seconds remaining as the Panthers looked to take the lead again.
However,
Fallyn Stephens' missed three was pulled in by Pace's Jackie DelliSanti, giving the Setters an opportunity to stretch their lead late at the free-throw line. DelliSanti made one of two on that possession, and after Kristina Olikhver blocked a Morgan effort for the Panthers, Pace restored its four-point edge as Geena Rosalbo sunk a pair from the line.
Though a
Julia Strachan three-pointer with just 11 seconds on the clock made it a one-point game, and Adelphi had the chance to tie with the last shot down three, Stephens' game-tying effort fell short at the final buzzer. Pace saw four players score in double figures in the effort, led by Rosalbo's 18 on 7-10 shooting.
The Panthers open play at home in the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon with a 1:30 p.m. contest against the University of New Haven. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a free cell phone tech pocket as a part of the first basketball promotion of the season.
