Pleasantville, N.Y. - Despite 52 percent shooting from the field, the Adelphi University men's basketball team suffered their first Northeast-10 Conference loss to Pace University Wednesday evening.
Five different players reached double-figure points in the loss, with
Jack Laffey leading the charge with 19 with 7-for-13 shooting from the field.
Conor McGuinness and
Doug Chappell were both responsible for 15, with the former nearly missing the double-double with nine assists.
Michael Coffey and
Tavon Ginyard rounded out the five with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The Panthers (1-2, 0-1 NE10) used 22 points from the bench in the first half to trail by just three at the conclusion of the opening frame. Chappell registered three straight points to put the visitors at their largest lead in the first, 25-20 at the 11:53 mark. The Setters (1-2, 1-0 NE10) quickly shifted the momentum back in their favor with 11 unanswered points, maintaining that lead until 3:25 left on the clock. A tre from Ginyard pushed Adelphi ahead by four, but seven tallies in the final minute for the home team gave them the three-point advantage at the half.
Coffey opened the second half of regulation with a three-pointer that evened the game at 52-all, but three consecutive layups kept Pace in the lead. A scoring drought for nearly a minute from both sides had the Brown and Gold up by one, but the Setters came back with four points to once more regain the upper hand. The hosts largest lead of the contest came at 3:42 when back-to-back buckets at the charity stripe for Ray Montilus made it an 11-point game. A late rally for the Panther offense was not enough as the home team closed out the 102-96 win to earn their first victory in NE10 action.
Adelphi returns to their home court on Saturday, November 18 when they host the University of New Haven, as the second set of the doubleheader tilt. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
