Men's Basketball Suffers Home Opening Defeat to New Haven, 84-79

11/18/2017 5:55:00 PM

Box Score Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a career-first double-double from Terrel Martin-Garcia, the Adelphi University men's basketball program suffered an 84-79 loss to the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon.

Martin-Garcia, who accounted for 17 points and 11 rebounds was matched by teammate Conor McGuinness who also had 17 points, adding five assists along the way. Two other players reached double-digits as Michael Coffey and Tavon Ginyard contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively. Six different players for the Chargers (3-1, 1-0 NE10) were in the same category, with Danny Upchurch leading his team with 16.

The Panthers (1-3, 1-1 NE10) jumped out to a comfortable lead, using a 10-2 run to hold onto a 10-points advantage eight minutes into the action. The visitors managed to chip away at the host lead over the following six minutes, even taking a two-point lead on an and-one situation at 29-27. Another double-figure run in favor of Adelphi and capped with a Coffey three-pointer, gave them their largest lead of the contest, which they maintained heading into the locker room.

Coming out of the half however, momentum quickly shifted as New Haven came out with nine unanswered points but a three from Ginyard put the Brown and Gold back in it. A scoring drought for the home team over two minutes allowed the Chargers to once more run away with an advantage - this time leading by at most 10, two times. McGuinness landed three three-pointers and used a layup from Doug Chappell to come within one under the 10-minute mark, but foul trouble down the stretch sent the visitors to the line, keeping the Panthers at bay.

Six of their last eight attempts at the charity stripe went in allowing New Haven to take an 84-79 victory in the Center for Recreation and Sports.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, November 21 when they host Le Moyne College at 7:30 p.m. The women's team will tip-off as the opening of the doubleheader tilt starting at 5:30 p.m.
