Bridgeport, Conn. - With an even contest at halftime, the Adelphi University men's basketball team came up short, as they dropped a 104-90 final decision to the University of Bridgeport, Sunday evening.
Jack Laffey was the leading scorer for the Panthers, finishing with 24 points as teammates
Conor McGuinness and
Terrel Martin-Garcia both chipped in 17 points apiece. McGuinness notched his second double-double of the season coupling his 6-for-10 shooting with 10 assists and
Michael Coffey was the final player in double-digits with 12 points.
The Brown and Gold jumped out to a seven-point advantage early in the first half, courtesy of three straight free throws from Coffey at the 17:32 mark. Their largest lead of the half and contest came nearly two minutes later when a fastbreak from Laffey put the visitors up eight. Bridgeport slowly began to chip away at their deficit and took their first lead of the half when Mrc Campbell landed back-to-back shots from the charity stripe with 5:40 remaining. An offensive board from
Austin Beech right before the buzzer allowed McGuinness to drain a shot from beyond the arc to knot the game at 46-all as the teams broke for the locker room.
The Purple Knights took control of the contest in the second half, collecting nine unanswered points to push their advantage to double-figures. Momentum shifted as Adelphi committed a 17-3 run that brought them within one of the hosts at 88-89, a span that featured three three-pointers from Laffey. The home team responded with three consecutive shots from down town to run up their lead with under four minutes to play as the Panthers attempted to match shots, but they just didn't fall. Bridgeport kept the visiting team scoreless under the 38 second mark, but the deficit was too great for AU to overcome as they fell by a 104-90 final.
The Panthers open up Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday, November 15 when they travel to take on the Setters of Pace University at 7:30 p.m.
