Garden City, N.Y. - A highly-anticipated clash between two teams unbeaten in Northeast-10 Conference play took to Motamed Field on Saturday, and lived up to the billing as the Adelphi University women's soccer team used a goal in each half to defeat Southern New Hampshire, 2-0.
Kerianne Scorce and
Sage Dieterle accounted for all the offense Adelphi (10-0, 8-0 NE10) would need in the contest with a goal in each half against SNHU (9-2-1, 7-1-1 NE10) keeper Paige Salmon, who came into the afternoon boasting a 0.44 goals against average which was tops in the NE10.Â
The Adelphi defense and
Isabel Sandstrom recorded their fourth straight shutout, running their scoreless streak to 389:20, as Sandstrom made three saves and got a defensive assist from
Nicole Forte, who cleared a ball out of a vacated net in the 12th minute with the game scoreless.
After the stand by the Brown and Gold defense on a furious offensive start by the Penmen, Scorce's fifth goal of the season came off the assist from
Madison Raposo as the sophomore expertly evaded a diving Salmon and crossed the ball into the empty net for the 1-0 Adelphi lead.
The score stayed as such for the duration of the first 45 minute, though not for lack of trying by the Penmen, who out-shot the Panthers by an 8-6 margin in the first half. The Panthers took their last shot of the half with just under 20 minutes remaining while SNHU took six in that span, two of which were saved by the Adelphi freshman keeper.Â
Four good looks went by for Adelphi to begin the second half, but Dieterle's header in the 53rd minute gave Adelphi the insurance it was seeking.
Jeanine Nunez fed in the corner kick to
Taylor Sipos, who duly set up a streaking Dieterle for the header on the right side of the net to make it a 2-0 game. From that point, Adelphi's defense clamped down, allowing SNHU to take just three more shots the rest of the way, none of which found the back of the net.Â
The Panthers ended the game with a 15-12 edge in shots, 10-4 of which were on goal, while becoming just the second team to shut out the Penmen this season.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 11, hosting the University of New Haven in a 7 p.m. NE10 contest on Motamed Field.Â
