Garden City, N.Y. - After nearly 90 minutes of scoreless soccer,
Jeanine Nunez's head connected with a free kick from the foot of
Taylor Sipos as the senior pair combined for the lone goal with 29 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the 10th-ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team past the University of New Haven on Wednesday night, 1-0, on a rainy Motamed Field.
Adelphi (11-0, 9-0 NE10) needed to work to remain perfect on the season against the determined Chargers (5-6-2, 2-6-2 NE10), as the Panthers saw several chances to break the scoreless tie go by in the previous 89:31.
The two teams doubled their shot output in a furious second half, as
Isabel Sandstrom and Paige Davis were forced to make one stop apiece over the first 45 minutes of NE10 action.Â
Two earlier efforts by Sipos and
Mia York in the second half hit the crossbar, and another effort by Sipos in the 75th minute was ruled to have not cleared the goal line before it was pounced on by Davis.
Adelphi's offensive persistence proved rewarded by the time the final whistle blew, as the Panthers ended the game with a 24-6 margin in overall shots taken.Â
The Chargers' best chance to score came in the 58th minute as Sandstrom had vacated her goal line, but Nunez got the job done on the defensive side of the ball as well, heading Rachel Dempsey's shot away as it headed towards the back of the net to keep the game scoreless.Â
A physical contest saw 20 combined team fouls and 10 corner kicks, as Davis made nine total saves against the Panther attack, including eight in the second half. Adelphi's freshman keeper in Sandstrom ran her shutout streak to four straight games, with some help from Nunez, as the Brown and Gold came away with another conference win.
The Panthers are back in action on the road on Saturday, Oct. 14 as they travel to Stonehill College for an 11 a.m. contest.
