Garden City, N.Y. - Despite holding an advantage in team blocks, the Adelphi University volleyball program fell to cross-town rival New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Tuesday evening.
The Panthers (11-12, 7-3 NE10) were led by outside hitter
McKenna Clawson who accounted for 10 kills, as
Megan Manierski finished the matchup with 19 assists. At the net,
Madison Canestrari accounted for five total blocks out of the AU middle.
The Bears (19-7, 6-4 ECC) had two players in double-figures with Karolina Moderova leading with 18 kills.
NYIT pulled away early in the first set after being locked at five-all with four straight points to lead 9-5. The home team attempted a late comeback, however, could not overcome the deficit, as they dropped the first set by a 25-18 final.
In the opening points of the second frame Adelphi capped a three-point run with a big block from Canestrari and Manierski to lead 9-6. Another four-point run down the stretch improved the host advantage to seven, courtesy of contributions from
Leilani Vazquez and a service ace from
Katarina Warburton. A timeout from NYIT turned into an 11-1 run in its favor to put the Bears back on top, eventually closing out the set 25-23.
In what was ultimately the final set, the teams battled back and forth in the early going, even being knotted at 13-all. The visiting team took advantage of Tiffany Verni at the service line, committing a 5-2 run which gave them a lead they never relinquished.
The first edition of the NCAA Division II regional rankings are scheduled to be posted tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 1. Adelphi returns to their home court on Friday, Nov. 3 when they host Merrimack College. Prior to the NE10 matchup, the Panthers will celebrate their lone senior, Manierski.
