Garden City, N.Y. - Six seniors were honored today on Motamed Field to celebrate the final home game of the Adelphi University field hockey team's 2017 season on Wednesday night, as the Greyhounds of Assumption College defeated the Panthers by a 1-0 final.
Before the start of the first half, seniors Justine DeLuca, Jessica Lodato, Jamie Ahrens, Libby Mercuri, Samantha Nizich and Amanda Gargiulo were honored alongside their families to celebrate their final contest on Motamed Field.
Once the clock started, both teams remained scoreless for the first 35 minutes of the game. Amanda Gargiulo tallied two saves and Jamie Ahrens secured one defensive save on the defensive end, while the Brown and Gold managed three shots in the opening half.
The second half score remained the same for majority of the 35 minutes until Deirdre Burchill went one on one against Gargiulo, beating the diving keeper to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute.
Adelphi (7-10, 5-6 NE10) tried to tie the game up by taking Gargiulo out of net and adding an extra field player on the turf late in the contest, however, the Panthers could not put a goal on the scoreboard.
The Panthers will play their final game of the regular season on Saturday versus the Merrimack Warriors on the road. The Northeast-10 matchup will begin at 6 p.m. in North Andover, Mass.
