North Andover, Mass. - The Adelphi University field hockey team capped the 2017 season with a 3-2 defeat to the Warriors of Merrimack College on Friday night.
The Warriors came out of the gate quickly, scoring the first goal of the contest during the seventh minute of the first half. The goal was credited to Taylor Simpson with the assist from Delaney Yule, the result of a penalty corner. A short six minutes later, Jessica Palmer of Merrimack (11-6, 7-5 NE10) increased the Warrior lead to two, sneaking the ball past Amanda Gargiulo at the the right post off a pass from Mary McNeil.
The score remained 2-0 at the end of the first 35 minutes, as Adelphi and the Warriors were even in shots on goal (5-5) as Gargiulo tallied three saves during the first half.
The second half continued and the scoreboard remained the same for the next 13 minutes until senior Libby Mercuri cut the Merrimack lead to one just before the 48th minute. In response to a crossing pass by Danielle Kempf, Mercuri put the ball in the back of the net to get Adelphi on the board in the comeback effort.
With under three minutes left in the game, Mercuri nailed a shot off a cross from Jackie Brown into the cage to tie the score up, 2-2, for her fifth multi-goal game of the season.
However, Merrimack prevailed with just 58 seconds remaining, as Lindsey Nolte scored the third goal for the Warriors to put them back in the lead and later claim the victory, 3-2.
The Brown and Gold finished the 2017 season at 7-11 and 5-7 in the Northeast-10 conference under first-year head coach Mary Moore.
