Volleyball Bounces Back with Four-Set Victory over Franklin Pierce

Garden City, N.Y. - After falling in five the previous evening to Southern New Hampshire University, the Adelphi University volleyball team turned around the weekend, picking up a 3-1 victory over Franklin Pierce Saturday afternoon.

Leading the way for the Panthers (9-11, 5-3 NE10) for the fourth consecutive game was McKenna Clawson, who totaled 18 kills behind a .255 hitting percentage. Also reaching double-digit kills was Leilani Vazquez with 12, as she polished off the double-double with 13 digs on defense. Katarina Warburton was responsible for a team-leading 28 digs as Megan Manierski paced the offense with 45 assists.

The home team found themselves in the hole early of the first set, trailing 12-4 but came back within two courtesy of a 9-3 run. The Ravens held on however, ending the opening frame with six of the last 10 points to secure a 25-21 victory. Adelphi quickly assessed and came back to the court, coming out of the gate much like their visitors in the first set. With the help three service aces from Katarina Warburton and a few blocks at the net, the hosts led by 11. Franklin Pierce managed a 6-3 run late in the second set, but the deficit was too great as Adelphi scored the final three points to even the match.

After a back-and-forth battle to start the third, the Brown and Gold rattled off five unanswered points to take a four-point advantage. Timely hitting from the Ravens brought them back in the game down the stretch, locking the game at 24-24, but a kill from Clawson and another service aces from Warburton, allowed Adelphi to claim the 26-24 win. The final set started out much like the third, but this time FPU was responsible for four straight points to push them ahead by two, 17-15. Cara McKenzie and Manierski both chipped in several times on offense to work out of the deficit and force a Raven timeout.

Adelphi used their best hitting percentage of the afternoon (.213) and an advantage in service aces for the match (7-2) to close the fourth and bounce back with a win to improve to 5-3 overall against Northeast-10 Conference opponents.

The squad will hit the road for back-to-back games starting on Friday, October 27 at Saint Anselm College, followed by a 1:00 p.m. contest at Saint Micheal's.
