Field Hockey Stands Even in NE10 After Win at Saint Michael's, 2-1

Box Score

Colchester, Vt. - The Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to Vermont for an 11 a.m. contest with Saint Michael's College on Saturday. After 70 minutes of play and a goal in each half by a pair of freshmen, the Panthers defeated the Purple Knights, 2-1.

Both teams remained scoreless for majority of the first half. With nine minutes left, Morgan Johnston of Saint Mike's (6-9, 3-7 NE10) tipped the ball into the cage off a blocked attempt from Marieke Algie.

It wasn't long however, until Adelphi (7-9. 5-5 NE10) responded with just over two minutes left in the half to tie the game 1-1. Lauren Parrinello lifted the ball above the keeper to score her first goal of the season and the equalizer in the contest, assisted by Jackie Brown.

Both teams were almost even in shots (6-5) and penalty corners for the first 35 minutes of action.

The second half commenced and the score remained the same for another 24 minutes. Just before the 60th minute, the Brown and Gold capitalized on a penalty corner, resulting in a 2-1 advantage with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Off a pass from Samantha Nizich, Jackie Brown nailed a shot from the center of the circle and deflect the ball into the goal off a Saint Michael's defender.

Adelphi held an edge over the Purple Knights in shots (7-6) and shots on goal (4-1),at the end of two periods.

The Panthers will play their last home game of the 2017 season on Tuesday, Oct. 24, when they celebrate the seniors' last battle on Motamed Field. The ceremonies will begin before the game at 6:00 p.m.
